Pick at the pops

Natasha Bedingfield

Our weekly round-up of the weird and wonderful world of pop music...

Musical taste tends to follow a natural order: your teenage sister loves McFly, your dad likes Dire Straits, the Prime Minister listens to ‘70s rock, every single member of the England World Cup squad plays 50 Cent in his Lamborghini Disappointment. But sometimes people surprise you. This week, the covert fans have been crawling out of the woodwork.

Starting with the truly surreal, it’s emerged that Natasha Bedingfield has recorded the theme to the new Rocky film at the personal request of the one and only Sylvester Stallone. Apparently, silver-tongued Sly is a big fan of her Unwritten album, much to Natasha’s reported surprise.  You and us both, Nat.  Then again, I’m sure No.1 smash These Words inspired a few people to throw a punch.

Meanwhile, salvation for the Scissor Sisters’ dumper-bound Trafalgar Square concert has come in the unlikely form of London mayor Ken Livingstone. Red Ken is said to have stepped in when the council got cold feet over the Manhattan high-campers’ plans.  A more plausible Scissor Sisters fan is Elton John. He’s a guest on their irresistible new single I Don’t Feel Like Dancin’, which you may as well get used to hearing.

Robbie Williams is a convincing Pet Shop Boys acolyte. They shared No Regrets, and now he’s appearing on their forthcoming Concert album.  Its release coincides with his own new single Rudebox which, we’re told, means lots of ‘different things’.  Ooo, the scamp.

Finally, the fragrant Jamelia has revealed a secret passion for Basildon synth-nerd pioneers Depeche Mode. She’s sampled the classic Personal Jesus for a track on her new album and dismisses looks of bewilderment with the news that she’s a ‘closet rocker’. Where do you start with that?
